Rogers Communications Inc. marked a milestone on Wednesday as the telecom provider officially turned on its wireless 5G network in downtown areas of Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and Montreal.

But while Rogers says the next-generation network is now up and running, customers will not be able to access it for some time because devices have not yet been authorized to connect to it.

Officially lighting up the network, however, is a signal to device manufacturers that Rogers is open for business, and ready to work with companies such as Apple and Samsung to ensure 5G devices are compatible with network infrastructure.

The era of having to pay cellular providers to unlock your cellphone will end this year.  As of Dec 1, you can ask your provider to unlock your phones free of charge, by the new rule from CRTC announced today.  At the same time, all newly purchased mobile devices must be provided to the customers unlocked.  Here the details: http://crtc.gc.ca/eng/phone/mobile/infograph01.htm

The federal Commissioner for Complains for Telecomunications Services (CCTS) just released the Middle Year Report on customer complains on all Participating Service Providers.  The total number of accepted complains is 4,562, of which 36.8% (1,677) is to Bell, 9.6% (437) to Rogers, 7.5% (341) to Wind Mobile, and 6.8% (310) to Telus.  Here's the link for the Middle Year Report.

Blackberry Priv gets major support from US carriers. Since it's initial launch on November 6 last year, Priv will be available from all US major carriers.  Priv is sold at 700,000 to 800,000 unit a quarter now.  Blackberry expects to see the device in 31 countries this year with target of selling 5 million units.

On March 3, 2015, the Government's auction of valuable Advanced Wireless Services-3 (AWS-3) spectrum was held. By May 2015, the amount of spectrum available to provide mobile services to consumers will have grown by almost 60 percent since early 2014.
